The thing I love about mules is they’re sweet without being sugary, syrupy, or too heavy.   They’re great in the summer and in the winter holidays!

What steps are needed to make a raspberry Moscow mule?

For the full list of ingredients and steps, please scroll down to the recipe card below. But here's a quick rundown of how it'll go:

First you’re going to muddle the raspberries and mint.

Then you’re going to juice about ½ a lime.

Fill your mug with ice halfway.

    And top with ginger beer!

Then if you want to garnish with some fresh raspberries, star anise and mint leaves it’ll look really pretty!

Why serve the mule in a copper mug?

Here’s some fun history behind the Moscow Mule dating back to 1941!

The cocktail we know (and love) today started with an industrious woman named Sophie Berezininski. Sophie migrated to the US from Russia with only 2,000 solid copper mugs. With no plan, other than to sell them and create a life for herself.

Sophie’s father owned a copper factory in Russia and Sophie came up with the design for the iconic hammered copper mug used for serving Mules.

It’s said that the copper adds flavor to the drink, and I don’t know a single Mule-lover that would have it served in any other drinkware.

I can’t help but imagine it would have been much easier to sell the mugs and make the cocktail famous if Instagram were around in the 40’s!  🙂 But word of mouth did the trick and she was able to do what she intended–sell copper mugs, make the Mule famous, and live the American dream.

And we still enjoy this cocktail today, as it was intended, in a hammered copper mug!

    What tools do I need?

Muddler: a spoon works just as well but I love having this handy tool around, it makes cocktail making a little easier and definitely more fun.

Mule Mugs: these are the ones I have, love, abs use all the time! They’re very pretty but any mule mugs will do! If you don’t have a mule mug or don’t have the space to keep more things in your cabinets—just use a steel coffee-mug-style tumbler.

Countertop Ice Maker: If you don't have one of these, you must get one. It's way easier than trying to plan ahead, this thing makes ice in ten minutes! 10 cubes in 10 minutes, it doesn't get more convenient than this.

Bar Cart:  I have this bar cart that I like to keep (fully stocked) in my guest room at all times.  When I’m craving a cocktail I have most of the basics here and it makes for great storage.

    What substitutions can I make?

If you don’t have raspberries on hand any fresh, berry will work.   I’ve used:

    • Strawberries
    • Blueberries
    • Blackberries

All have been successful and quite delicious in this cocktail!

Mint: If you don’t have fresh mint feel free to swap it with fresh basil or simply leave out the herbs altogether!

You're going to love this Raspberry Mint Mule, cheers!
