It’s almost Dry January and I am ready, what about you?

There’s nothing better than a 30-day break from alcohol to kick off the year.  I’m not speaking from a health perspective, simply a personal one, but I know from my own experience the benefits are endless.

If you participate in Dry January, and possibly go even longer, you’ll notice some major benefits.  Here are a few that I’ve noticed for myself:

    • Weight loss - yep, I lost a few pounds, but don’t expect a lot.  The weight loss was mostly just bloat, but even with that my clothes fit a lot better and I felt better.
    • Skin - I’ve always struggled with PMS acne.  However, without the booze guess what? No acne.  Coincidence? Possibly, but I don’t think so!
    • Mood - No. More. Hangxiety.  The anxiety that I was feeling pretty much cleared up after an extended break from alcohol.  There was a point where I’d be waking up in the middle of the night or early in the morning with a racing heart and spending all day worrying about weird things.  Not anymore, life is much more peaceful.

Is there a downside to Dry January?

Not really, giving up alcohol for any amount of time will benifit you.

However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that you will have a lot more time on your hands.  More boredom, and this isn’t a bad thing.  Just be sure to have something to fill that time with.  Perhaps you could take up a new hobby such as sewing or knitting?   Perhaps you’ll go to bed earlier and wake up well rested?

Or my favorite way to fill some of that time? Mocktail-making! Mocktails can have tons of health benefits (many have herbs, kombucha, and fresh juice) and they’re absolutely delicious.

Ingredients & how to make it

You just need two simple ingredients:

    • Water - use filtered water to avoid any unpleasant tastes.
    • Granulated (white) sugar

That's it. Again, this is Super Simple Syrup. Not extra-fancy-complicated-syrup (there's a time and a place for that).

To make it you're going to heat up your electric kettle - I have this one.

Process shot collage shot on an iphone with screen grabs from a video.

Then pour ½ cup of sugar into a pyrex (or you can use a mason jar).

After that pour ½ cup of boiling water over the sugar.

And finally stir it until it dissolves.

Let it cool to room temperature. Store it in a jar with a tight lid.

It'll last in the fridge for about 3 weeks!
