This Blood Orange Hibiscus Mocktail is refreshing and so hydrating! It’s refined sugar-free, bright, citrusy, and delicious.

This mocktail is perfect for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up or an evening wind-down. It contains hibiscus tea, blood oranges, honey, lime juice and sparkling water.
When I started making this drink, I didn’t use the hibiscus tea. I felt like it really needed another layer of flavor and then added it in and it was perfect! The distinct flavor of the blood oranges - slightly sweeter, less acidic, with berry-adjacent undertones, pairs well with the tartness of hibiscus.
Hibiscus + blood oranges: It’s a match made in mocktail heaven! Mocktail heaven, surely it’s a thing? Perhaps this drink is the closest I’ll get!
Ingredients + substitutions
The ingredients are pretty simple, you can find all of them easily at any grocery store. As long as blood oranges are in season (December-April), you should have no problem finding them. If you can’t, don’t worry, we’ll talk about some suitable substitutions.
- Hibiscus tea - just pour ¼ cup of boiling water over a hibiscus teabag. If you can’t find “pure” hibiscus tea, you can use Tazo’s Passion Tea or a blend of hibiscus and rose tea.
- Honey - for sweetness. If you don’t want to add it you can leave it out. Or you can use a 1:1 ratio of whatever sweetener you like.
- Blood oranges - juiced. You’ll need about ¼ cup, depending on the size of your oranges you’ll need 2-3. I got ¼ cup from 3 small blood oranges. If you don't have/can’t find blood oranges, you can swap them for navel oranges or grapefruits! Just squeeze the juice out and you’ll be good to go.
- Lime juice - for some brightness and citrus flavor. You can swap the lime juice for lemon juice if you’d like!
- Sparkling water - just a splash or two for bubbles. If you like things really sweet you can add ginger beer.
Step-by-step (with photos)
STEP 1: Brew the hibiscus tea. Simply place a hibiscus (or hibiscus blend tea bag) into a Pyrex measuring cup and pour ¼ cup of boiling water over it. Stir in the honey, set it aside to cool off a little.
STEP: Fill a glass with ice. Pour the cooled tea over the ice.
STEP 3: Prep the orange juice - squeeze the juice from the blood oranges until you have ¼ cup.
STEP 4: Add the juice to your glass. Then add the lime juice and finish with a splash or two of sparkling water.
Variations
You can certainly change this up to work with what you have. If you don’t have hibiscus tea you can use rose tea or some kind of fruity blend. Raspberry leaf tea is also a great option!
If you like things super sweet you can swap out the sparkling water for flavored sparkling water, ginger beer, or even lemon-lime soda.
What does this mocktail pair with?
If you used to drink wine, and you’re into pairing interesting drinks with flavors, then I am right there with you.
I even wrote an entire post about non-alcoholic drinks to pair with cheese or charcuterie!
It’s nice to have a fancy drink with dinner and consider the flavors and how they’ll go together.
This mocktail is fruity and bright, but it isn’t overly sweet. Blood oranges, the main flavor profile in this drink, aren’t too acidic or overwhelming, therefore you can easily pair this mocktail with desserts, salads (especially salads with fennel or blood oranges), chicken, and even fish and steak!
More functional mocktails and non-alcoholic cocktails I'm obsessed with
If you’re super into functional mocktails, like me, I’m totally obsessed, then you’ll love these! They’re mostly made with teas, low (or totally absent) of refined sugar, and they’re all fun to sip on!
