I did a bit of research online, and there is a lot of conflicting information about orange cream soda. Some people think you buy it pre-made in a store, some people think it’s bottled orange soda and ice cream, and some people think it’s a fancy drink you sip on in Sicily.
Well, I’ve never been to Italy (although, I’m seriously dreaming about going someday very soon), and I’ve never in my life had a bottled orange soda. So here is my take on this drink, in mocktail form. I’m almost certain it’s better than anything you’re going to find…anywhere. And that includes Italy.
That’s a bold statement, I know. But I’m a huge fan of homemade drinks (this is one of my all-time favorites), and this drink is fan-freakin’-tastic.
You’re going to love it as much as I do.
Ingredients + substitutions
Granulated cane sugar - you really can’t substitute this one. White sugar or bust.
Fresh orange juice - you can squeeze it from some oranges like I did, or you can just use the orange juice you have in your fridge that you bought at the store. Either way, you’re going to get a tasty result!
Sparkling mineral water - use Italian sparkling mineral water. Some brands are way too fizzy, and this is what I tested the recipe with so this is what I’m recommending. Of course you can use any unflavored sparkling water or club soda that you have, but for the best result, get the S. Pellegrino.
Heavy cream - heavy cream or half and half. If you substitute this with mil you won’t get those pretty swirls or that creaminess. While I don’t recommend it, you can do that.
Here's how to make it
STEP 1: Grab a saucepan and make orange simple syrup. Over medium heat, whisk together the sugar and orange juice until the sugar dissolves. Remove it from the heat and let it cool.
STEP 2: Now fill a glass with ice. Pour 3 tablespoons of that simple syrup over the ice. Add ¼ cup orange juice.
STEP 3: Top with ¼ cup sparkling water.
STEP 4: Now top with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream.
STEP 5: Give it a gentle stir.
Isn’t it pretty? Not only is it pretty, it’s absolutely delicious.
