Why is this the ultimate mocktail?

    • It tastes like a cocktail - although this drink is completely alcohol-free, it tastes just like a real cocktail because of the flavor of the kombucha and the balsamic vinegar.
    • It’s functional - kombucha is made of fermented tea (which is loaded with benefits), pomegranate juice (full of antioxidants), and balsamic vinegar (adds flavor and it’s gut friendly!)
    • Smells amazing - part of drinking cocktails is the ritual involved, and with this mocktail, you’re going to get the ritual of making a drink, and everything that comes with it.  Including the herbal smell (from the rosemary) and the look of the overall drink.  It’s gorgeous! And simple to make at home.

What is Dry January and why participate?

Dry January is a movement that was started to help individuals abstain from alcoholic beverages during the entire month.

This comes after some particularly indulgent months (November and December) and people often welcome the break!

However, it can be difficult! During this time, participants often drink mocktails, get into sober-curious groups, and reevaluate their relationship with alcohol.

Most people that are successful during Dry January, or Dry-ish January report better sleep, improved mood, and overall have a very positive experience.

    Dry January tips + tricks

    • Change things up - change up your routine, seriously! This is huge.  If you drive the same route each day and pass the liquor store, take a new route! If your favorite grocery store has beer and wine right inside the door? Try a new grocery store.
    • Replace the habit - make tons of mocktails.  Fun mocktails, that’ll make you forget all about alcohol.  Here's a list of awesome Dry January mocktails that actually taste like real cocktails!
    • Find support - find an accountability partner that’s also participating in Dry January.  Whenever you feel tempted, call or text this person to talk about how you’re feeling.
    • Plan ahead - if you typically reach for wine at 5 pm, or mindlessly pour a glass while you’re cooking dinner, be prepared.  Have a drink ready to sip on.
    • Really commit - take all of the alcohol out of your house.  You don’t have to throw it away, maybe take it to a friend or neighbors house until the end of the month.  It’s much harder to succeed if alcohol is in the house, and around you at any given time.  Remove the temptation and success is much more likely!

    Ingredients + substitutions

Ingredients needed to make a kombucha mocktail on a sheet pan.
    • Kombucha - this drink is fizzy, sweet, and vinegar-y tasting.  Therefore it’s perfect for mocktails!  An “original” or unflavored kombucha is best here, but you can use a flavored one if you’d like–just make sure it’s something you like because the flavor will come out in the mocktail (read on to see the variations of kombucha mocktails you can make).
    • Pomegranate juice - pomegranate juice isn’t too sweet, therefore it’s perfect with kombucha.  If you don’t have pomegranate juice, you can swap it out for tart cherry juice, concord grape or cranberry juice.
    • Balsamic vinegar - we’re adding this ingredient to give the drink that “cocktail” flavor.  Additionally, balsamic vinegar has a ton of gut benefits.
    • Rosemary sprig - for flavor, looks, and it smells great! You’re going to enjoy sipping on your mocktail while taking in the herbal-smell of the rosemary sprig.

    Step-by-step

Fill a glass with ice. It helps if it's your favorite glass!

Add the kombucha, pomegranate juice, balsamic vinegar, and give it a stir.

Run the rosemary sprig along the outer circle of the glass and then drop it in.

    Variations

    • Ginger kombucha mocktail - get a ginger-flavored kombucha or add ½ tsp of freshly grated ginger to your drink.
    • Cranberry kombucha mocktail - instead of using pomegranate juice, use cranberry! Just know that if you do this you might need to add some sweetener such as simple syrup or agave to sweeten it up to balance out the tartness of the cranberry juice.
    • Kombucha mule mocktail - instead of using juice, add ginger beer.
    • Mango kombucha mocktail - use mango juice instead of pomegranate.
