Almost everyone I know participates, or intends to participate in dry January.  Dry January is the month where most people try to focus on reaching their health goals, and give up alcohol for some better options.

Allow me to introduce you to some better options.  My blog has a lot of mocktails, from the more full-bodied and savory to the sweet.  Most of them don’t require added sugar and have some kind of functional benefit, but you always have the option to make them sweeter if you’d like! Just see the recipe notes and variations!

That said, let’s talk about this particular mocktail that features green tea as the main source of flavor!

    Recipe highlights

    • Tastes like a real, seltzer cocktail!
    • Has functional benefits (being that it’s made out of green tea!)
    • Perfect for social gatherings, the green tea will keep you alert and hydrated!
    • It’s completely alcohol-free, but still exciting to drink!

Mocktails are inclusive (everyone can have one!), and delicious.  If you haven’t ventured into the mocktail world beyond seltzer water and a lime, I suggest diving right in!

    Ingredients + substitutions

Ingredients needed to make a green tea mocktail
    • Green tea - this is the main flavor of this mocktail.  Simply brew a bag of green tea in hot water and you’re ready to go!
    • Honey - for just a little sweetness.  You can, of course, substitute this ingredient for white sugar, agave, or simple syrup.
    • Sparkling water - for bubbles.  If you like your mocktail sweeter, you can swap the sparking water for lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7up).  You could also use ginger beer!
    • ACV (apple cider vinegar) - this is for flavor and gives it that “bite” that most “real” cocktails have.  When you’re making a mocktail, you often want it to be a little more exciting than just sparkling water and some juice.  Adding vinegar will give you that extra-something that most mocktails are missing.

    Step-by-step

Green tea mocktail process shot (brewing the tea in a pyrex).

Brew one bag of green tea in ¼ cup of hot water.  Stir in the honey.

Fill a short glass with ice, pour the brewed green tea and honey over the ice.

    Next add the sparkling water.

Then top with the apple cider vinegar and give it a gentle stir.

Garnish with a lemon wedge, if desired! Enjoy!

    Variations

    • Matcha green tea mocktail - if you want to up the caffeine level, stir in a teaspoon of matcha with your green tea, and strain it over ice (you don’t want big clumps in your mocktail).
    • Green tea and mint mocktail - add a few fresh mint leaves to your mocktail and enjoy the minty-fresh flavor!
    • Green tea and pomegranate mocktail - add 2 tablespoons of pomegranate juice to your mocktail!
    • Green tea and tart cherry juice mocktail - tart cherry juice has a number of functional benefits and it’s extremely relaxing! Simply add a splash or two of tart cherry juice to your finished mocktail and enjoy!

    FAQs

How do you make a green tea mocktail?

It’s simple, just brew some green tea, add a sweetener, then top it with sparkling water and some citrus.  See the recipe below for the full recipe.

How do you make a mocktail taste like a real cocktail?

Adding a splash of apple cider vinegar should achieve this result! Often the “bite” that you get from a real cocktail is missing with mocktails, and you can get a similar “cocktail flavor” by adding some acid to your drink (like ACV).

Does a green tea mocktail pair well with meat and cheese?

A green tea is a great non-alcoholic alternative to wine or cocktails that you can pair with a charcuterie board.

Will a green tea mocktail relax me?

Well, green tea does have some caffeine but it also contains L-theanine, which is relaxing and provides a more balanced, smoother energy boost.  I think this mocktail is great for social situations.

    Ingredients

    • ¼ cup green tea freshly brewed
    • 1 tsp honey
    • ½ cup sparkling water or lemon-lime soda
    • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

    Instructions

    • Brew one bag of green tea in ¼ cup of hot water. Stir in the honey.
    • Fill a short glass with ice, pour the brewed green tea and honey over the ice.
    • Next add the sparkling water.
    • Then top with the apple cider vinegar and give it a gentle stir.
    • Garnish with a lemon wedge, if desired! Enjoy!

    Notes

As it’s written, this isn’t a super sweet mocktail. If you want your mocktail super sweet, be sure to use lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) instead of sparkling water.
