When it comes to mocktails, I am not a huge fan of tons of sugar, classic sodas, or making simple syrups that make the drink overly sweet.  Although those can be nice on occasion, this blueberry mocktail doesn’t need it.

This mocktail is something of a smash, it contains muddled fresh blueberries and this releases the flavors and provides a nice subtle color for your drink.

    Ingredients

    • Blueberries: fresh or frozen will work, but if you are using frozen, be sure to let them thaw out for a bit so that they’re easier to muddle.
    • Lemon juice: for a citrusy kick.
    • Honey: for a touch of sweetness.
    • Bitters: I used Trader Joe’s Bitters, but Angostura Aromatic Bitters is a great choice as well!
    • Sparkling mineral water: I like to use S.Pellegrino Sparkling water because the taste and the level of carbonation are the best.

    The process

    • In a glass, add 10 blueberries, lemon juice, honey, and bitters.
    • Muddle everything together with the back of a wooden spoon or just smash and stir with a fork.
    • Add a handful of ice to your glass and top with sparkling water.
    • Garnish with a lemon wedge and some blueberries if desired.

    Substitutions

If you don’t want to use sparkling water, or want your mocktail a little sweeter, you can use Sprite or Ginger Beer.

If you don’t have or like bitters, just feel free to leave it out.  It just adds spiciness and bitterness to make this mocktail taste a little more like the real thing.

    FAQs

What’s the point of a mocktail?

Mocktails are a non-alcoholic alternative to traditional cocktails.  They’re refreshing, visually appealing, and they offer a safe alternative for those who may be pregnant, non-drinkers, or in situations where alcohol may not be appropriate to consume.

Can I use frozen blueberries in this mocktail?

Yes! Just let them thaw a bit so that they’re easier to muddle.

This mocktail isn’t sweet enough, what should I do?

If you like your mocktails on the sweeter side, swap the sparking water for sprite or ginger beer.  Or if you want to keep it healthy, just add a touch more honey and it’ll be sweet enough.

    Ingredients

    • 10 fresh blueberries
    • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
    • 1 tsp honey
    • 2-3 drops bitters
    • sparkling mineral water *Sprite or Ginger Beer

    Instructions

    • In a glass, add 10 blueberries, lemon juice, honey, and bitters.
    • Muddle everything together with the back of a wooden spoon or just smash and stir with a fork.
    • Add a handful of ice to your glass and top with sparkling water.
    • Garnish with a lemon wedge and some blueberries if desired.

    Notes

NOTES: If you like your mocktail a little sweeter, free to swap the sparking water for Sprite or ginger beer.
If you don’t have or don’t like bitters, leave it out. It’s really not essential but it gives this mocktail that bitterness that “real” cocktails often contain.
