Broccolini is just better in every way. It looks nicer on a plate (this is very important to me, for some reason), and it tastes better. There’s just something special and ever-so-much-more elegant about it than the traditional broccoli florets. Which, I’ll admit, are also delicious. But they just can’t compare.
If it’s between broccoli florets and broccolini? Broccolini every time. Hands down, end of discussion!
Just kidding, let’s keep discussing why you must try grilled broccolini with lemon!
Ingredients
- Broccolini - a mild, earthy-tasting winter green. It’s not technically baby broccolini. It’s a hybrid cross between broccoli (the “regular” broccoli that comes to mind when you think of it), and Chinese broccoli. It’s delicious and it looks fabulous on your plate.
- Olive oil - for tossing your broccolini in, adds flavor and health.
- Lemon juice - adds flavor and a bit of acidic zing.
- Kosher salt - always use kosher or sea salt when cooking. Table salt has an unpleasant metallic taste and it’s just not worth ruining your dish over. Himalayan salt is also a very nice choice, if you have it!
- Freshly ground black pepper - or whatever black pepper you have on hand. It adds flavor.
- Garlic powder - I like to use garlic powder here because using real garlic is a risk when grilling. If you burn minced garlic you can end up with a bitter flavor and you don’t want that!
- Oregano - for flavor, feel free to leave it out or substitute it for Italian seasoning.
- Red pepper flakes - they add a nice, small amount of heat. If you’re sensitive to spice or serving this to kids, you may leave it out!

I’m making this grilled broccolini on my Pit Boss Pellet Grill. It's a great grill, it's not a Traeger, but I recommend it.
If for no other reason than the options for pellet flavors are endless (and cheaper than Traeger brand) - it’s overall just very user friendly. That said, any grill will work for this recipe.
Let’s go over the steps:
- Preheat your grill to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Clean and oil your grill grate.
- Cut the stems of the broccolini into equal widths.
- Drizzle olive oil, lemon juice, and spices over the broccolini and make sure you mix it together well.
- Place the broccolini directly onto the preheated grill over indirect heat. for 4-6 minutes on each side.
- Finish by placing the broccolini into direct heat in 30 second increments for a bit of a char (totally optional).
- You’ll know it’s finished when it’s fork tender. Or al dente, I like mine on the firmer side.
Pro tip(s)
If you’re making this alongside a main dish, such as smoked chicken thighs, or grilled pink shrimp, just add them to the grill as your main protein is almost finished and you have a complete meal!
Not to mention, or perhaps I have already mentioned, that the look of broccolini on your plate seriously elevates the dish. Broccolini is gorgeous.
FAQs
CAN YOU GRILL BROCCOLINI?
Yes, my method is the best way to grill broccolini. It’s easy, but if you’d like to complicate it, you can elevate it by adding shaved parmesan, shallots, and bacon bits. Maybe even some crumbled goat cheese and a balsamic drizzle! I can imagine it…can you?
WHY GRILL BROCCOLINI ON A PELLET GRILL?
I love using a pellet grill. The flavor options are endless when it comes to the pellets and they infuse so much flavor into your food! Also, the option to close the vent and cook over indirect heat is basically fool-proof.
Substitutions and additions
- Broccolini - you cannot substitute the broccolini for regular broccoli, but you can follow this recipe with asparagus in its place.
- Parmesan - Technically not a substitution, but you can add some shaved parmesan and take this side dish to the next level.
- Crumbled bacon - Again, not a substitution, but you can add a few bacon crumbles to the top of this side dish and really elevate it.
Storage and reheating
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
Reheating - you can microwave the broccolini in a vented container with a splash of water for a minute on high. After that, microwave in 30 second increments until it’s warmed through.
